Los Angeles based performer Rod Rozzelle began his quest of the rhythmic beat at an early age. Born in Las Vegas, Rod took up drumming at the age of three. In pursuit of his musical interest, Rod studied with the noted percussionist Luis Cameron. Drums and percussion quickly became a way of life for Rod. Having developed his talent performing at high school social events, Rod felt confident that an education in music would provide him with the exposure to the music scene he desired. Leaving behind the city that never sleeps for sunny California, Rod began his studies at Orange Coast College in 1967. Immersed in music, Rod sought to refine his technical ability through his studies with local jazz drummer, Gary Howland. Hitting the scene at local jazz clubs and venues, Rod was soon recognized as one of Southern California's top performers. In 1972, Rod moved his family to the heart of LA where he would try his hand as a studio musician. In an effort to diversify his talent, Rod studied vibes and marimba with known masters such as Earl Hatch, Dale Anderson, and Victor Feldman. After three years of serious study, Rod found himself on the sound stages of shows such as Fantasy Island, The Bionic Woman, Knott's Landing, Lavern & Shirley, and Officer and a Gentleman. During his down time, Rod toured with Nina Simone, O.C. Smith, and Roberta Lynn. Other works in town include appearances with Johnny Mathis, Seals & Croft, and his very own band, Burn. It wasn't long before Rod became eager to enhance his musical repertoire. Drawn to the heat of Latin Music, Rod began his studies with Luis Conte. " I felt a sense of homecoming when my hands hit the Congas for the first time. It was as if I had finally arrived to where I was supposed to be". His passion for the Latin beat consumed him. Rod shared his newfound passion with his wife Cathy. Together they immersed themselves in the Latin culture. Their travels led them to the heart of Cuba where music prevails in daily life. It was in Havana Cuba that Rod studied folkloric drumming with Master Drummers Fermine Nani and Rejino Jimenez. In 1995, Rod partnered with his daughter and jazz pianist Raina Rozzelle, and fellow Latin percussionist Ray Vaca to form his current band, Tres-Dos. Tres-Dos is a sizzling six piece Latin Jazz Ensemble accented with Latin vocals led by Rod himself. The band has appeared at venues such as Spaghettini, Lunaria, Atlas, Cava, Spazio and Club Brassiere. Received with enthusiasm from local musicians and fans, Tres-Dos is widely recognized for it's dynamic fusion of Latin Jazz and Afro-Cuban Rhythm. In early 2002, the release of La Zona Ritmo hit the streets of Los Angeles. Written and produced by Rod himself, the first CD for Tres-Dos has been met with great success. Rod attributes the success of the CD to his family and the many talented musicians who played a part in the fruition of his work.
